Interstellar Extinction and Elemental Abundances

چکیده

Elements in the interstellar medium (ISM) exist form of gas or dust. The extinction and elemental abundances provide crucial constraints on composition, size, quantity Most modeling efforts have assumed total (gas dust) dust-forming elements—known as "interstellar abundances," reference "cosmic abundances"—to be solar gas-phase to environmentally independent. However, it remains unclear whether are an appropriate representation abundances. Meanwhile, known exhibit appreciable variations with local environments. Here we explore viability B stars, protosolar abundances, augmented by Galactic chemical enrichment (GCE) quantitatively examining 10 sight lines for which both curves all major elements (i.e., C, O, Mg, Si Fe) been observationally determined. Instead assuming a specific dust model then fitting observed curves, each line apply model-independent Kramers–Kronig relation, relates wavelength-integrated volume, place lower limit depletion. This, together derived allows us rule out B-star, solar, standard support GCE-augmented viable

Interstellar propagation of cosmic rays: analysis of the Ulysses primary and secondary elemental abundances

The purpose of this investigation is to study the validity of the “leaky box” propagationmodel and determine some of its parameters. The pathlength distributions and their energy dependencies are derived from measurements of secondary-toprimary abundance ratios. A special charged particle telescope carried on the Ulysses spacecraft has provided a complete separation of elements from hydrogen to...

Interstellar Atomic Abundances

A broad array of interstellar absorption features that appear in the ultraviolet spectra of bright sources allows us to measure the abundances and ionization states of many important heavy elements that exist as free atoms in the interstellar medium. By comparing these abundances with reference values in the Sun, we find that some elements have abundances relative to hydrogen that are approxima...

Neutrino Physics and the Primordial Elemental Abundances

Limits can be placed on nonstandard neutrino physics when big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) calculations employing standard neutrino physics agree with the observationally inferred primordial abundances of deuterium (D), He, He, and Li. These constraints depend most sensitively on the abundances of D and He. New observational determinations of the primordial D and/or He abundances could force revi...

Quasar Elemental Abundances and Host Galaxy Evolution

High redshift quasars mark the locations where massive galaxies are rapidly being assembled and forming stars. There is growing evidence that quasar environments are metal-rich out to redshifts of at least five. The gas-phase metallicities are typically solar to several times solar, based on independent analyses of quasar broad emission lines and intrinsic narrow absorption lines. These results...

Interstellar extinction by porous grains

Interstellar extinction curve E(λ-V)/E(B-V) vs 1/λ is evaluated in the spectral range 3.4 μm and 0.1 μm using the extinction efficiencies of the porous silicate and graphite grains. The extinction efficiencies of the porous silicate and graphite grains are computed using the discrete dipole approximation (DDA). The model curves are compared with the average observed interstellar extinction curv...
